Speeding in a construction zone is a Petty Offense.  This offense is eligible for Court Supervision.  However, a Court appearance is mandatory.  (625 ILCS 5/11-605.1)

The fines for speeding in a construction or maintenance work zone are a minimum of $375 + court costs for the first offense and a minimum of $1000 + court costs for the second offense.

  

If the second offense is within two years of the first offense, the Secretary of State shall suspend the driver's license for a period of 90 day.

One very common misconception is that lower speed limit is not applicable if workers are not present.  Workers DO NOT have to be present to receive a speeding ticket in a work zone.
